My friend's nickname is "foo bar". Here is what I see in my irssi status window when he connects and disconnects:

Argh, those spaces keep coming back. :-(
Two things: Do you use libpurple? And can you see what this looks like in raw IRC logs?

Here is the log, with nicknames edited out for privacy. The local hostname is belvedere.
I used irssi.
:root!root@belvedere PRIVMSG &bitlbee :oscar(atnnn) - Logging in: Logged in :foobar!foo bar@oscar JOIN :&bitlbee :quuxqaz!quux qaz@oscar JOIN :&bitlbee :belvedere MODE &bitlbee +v quuxqaz
foobar and quuxqaz do not appear in the names list for &bitlbee.
