"should"? Sorry?
Write the stupid patch yourself or quit the whining.
Remember you're an OSS user, not a paying customer.

Sorry dy, I thought this lame comment came from you, these BTS e-mails are a bit hard to parse sometimes, especially at half past seven in the morning. ;-)
Anyway, our anonymous "friend" here should realize BitlBee is an OSS project, not some commercial product with paying customers. If he wants to become a paying customer he can contact me and we can see if this feature can be implemented a little bit sooner. Otherwise, we'll have to see about that. It's definitely not the most important thing on my TODO.
Also, remember it took Microsoft at least six years to implement this "the most basic feature". Are you sure it's really that basic? ;-)

These messages are a GROSS hack:

I wonder if someone tried to figure out if MS sends these notifications to non-MSNP13 clients anyway...

How about a protocol plugin that uses libmsn (appears dead, but there's a new developer, and code already supports OIM; no release since API isn't solid yet, so check svn)?
It seems the right way to me. And from what I see it shouldn't be to hard to make them play together. I might try it when I find some time.
wilmer, or anyone with some clue: what do you think?

Why not use libpurple instead ? it is used by pidgin, and offline messages work perfectly.

How hard is this to implement for xmpp? If offline messages are possible for jabber, users of other protocols could at least make use of that via one of the widespread jabber-icq/aol/msn/...-gateways.

This is now supported! I'll merge in that branch pretty soon. :-)

Fixed by msnp13 branch, now merged.
I second that. Bitlbee should be faster in deploying the most basic features of the supported IM platforms.
