I've tested this at least in msn, but it may affect other protocols. It seems that away somehow overrides the offline status. Reproduce should be as simple as setting yourself away, then logging off.

Uhhh, this one doesn't make sense. There's no way you can still appear as 'away' if you're offline - as in disconnected from the server.
It's been a very long time since I reported this, but I'm guessing that it meant after you reconnected you were still away.
