You should know BEFORE sending a text if you have gone off-the-record or not

Description
I just finished sending a great deal of text to a friend, only to find out that I wasn't secure before starting. Currently, with OTR in Bitlbee, there is no way to visually identify if you have gone secure with a buddy or not. With Irssi-OTR, you can add an element to your statusbar that lets you know if you're "off-the-record" or not.
With Bitlbee, the only way I know to go secure is to run "otr connect (buddy)" from &bitlbee, but even then, there is no way of knowing for sure visually if that succeeded.
Something to add to the statusbar or topicbar would be optimal, like with Irssi-OTR. I use private windows for each buddy, so seeing +v/+o doesn't really help me unless I'm in &bitlbee, and run '/names'.

bitlbee has no control over topic or status bars of your irc client. unless there is some server-global flag we can set on a user that will show up on a query window...
you can find out the current otr status by typing
in the control channel. i know it's not exactly what you're looking for. :/
we might be able to place the connection state in the user's
/whoisinfo, if that would help?
