i can't open bitlbee!!!

i'm using ubuntu 8.04 (hardy) after installing bitlbee from the terminal using that code: sudo apt-get install bitlbee it says that the program installed successfully but when i try to run the program it said that: 

Warning: Unable to read configuration file `/etc/bitlbee/bitlbee.conf'.
:localhost.localdomain NOTICE AUTH :BitlBee-IRCd initialized, please go on
ERROR :Warning: Permission problem: Can't read/write from/to `/var/lib/bitlbee/'.
ERROR :Closing link: Ping Timeout: 180 seconds

any help?????!!!!!

Resolution: → invalid
Status: new → closed

BitlBee is automaticallly started when you install the package.

Open irssi in the terminal, then type; /connect bitlbee1.asnetinc.net

This launches bitlbee in the irssi terminal.

Note: irssi must be installed first for this to work, but this can be done through the terminal in the usual way.
