using im.bitlbee.org I remember having errors on pidgin as well, but at least I could connect

Looking at the IRC logs, it looks like you and Maurits figured this out already.
This bug report is extremely incomplete. Can you also give your account add line, and probably more interesting, the xmlconsole output? (help account set)
