#298 new defect

removed buddies reappear

Description

So I have a problem that when I delete IM contacts they just re-appear at some point, usually soonish. On #bitlbee toxik said he has also seen this behavior. It happens both with 1.0.3 and 1.1dev, under AIM, Yahoo Messenger, Jabber, and MSN.

Background info:

  • I did a "import_buddies" by accident at one point (actually my recollection is fuzzy; I may have done it to try to fix this problem :-)
  • Specific version string: bitlbee-1.1dev. localhost Linux/x86_64
  • I am only logged onto AIM via bitlbee, not from multiple places
  • Buddies can re-appear almost immediately, or take some time, but usually under a day.
  • I'm thinking this might be related to the ex-buddy doing any kind of state change.

Confirmed that this is happening with Yahoo Messenger as well as AIM. It's actually more annoying for YIM because AIM you can just "block" people instead of "remove"ing them, but YIM doesn't support the "block" command.

Verified: This problem does also occur with gay young boys.

Confirmed, too. You just need to to re-login and deleted buddy is there again. God, this is annoying... I really don't want to see this one guy on Yahoo.

This is still valid for the version shipped with ubu 10.04, or rater started after upgrading to the current version. perhaps someone should fix it now, instead of having this thread for three years - I would if I could..

So would I. ;-(

It's probably not too hard to fix, just that I'd first have to find out why this is going wrong. Which is hard when third party closed protocols get involved.

If someone feels like giving it a shot I'm happy to take any patches. I hope to have time for it too at some point, but I have many other things to do on my list...

This may be related; apologies if not. Before 3.0 came out, I was using bitlbee-otr 1.2.8. Adding/removing my MSN contacts used to work fine. Since upgrading to bitlbee 3.0, all my previously blocked and removed contacts (going back years) have appeared in "blist all". Pidgin does not show these users in my list, nor did bitlbee-otr. If related, perhaps the code for bitlbee-otr might give a hint as to how to resolve this. If it's unrelated, this could perhaps be listed as a new bug. I've never run the regular bitlbee 1.2.8, so do not know if that acted the same as 3.0 or as bitlebee-otr. I also only use MSN currently in bitlbee, so cannot comment on other protocols.

Same with bitlbee without otr compiled on Slackware 13.1. Removed contacts suddenly reappeared in MSN.

I'm experiencing the same. According to wilmer, this is because bitlbee now shows all buddies from allow+block lists in blist, and not only the ones in your roster/contact list. So don't worry, these buddies are not being suddenly added to the contact list (as you just saw when you used pidgin).

This also means I doubt this issue you described is the same as the one stated in this ticket, because the OP is using an older version of bitlbee, and this doesn't happen with 1.2.8-1; and because this is something that's MSN-specific (unless other protocols have similar issues).

If you want to try 1.2.8, that's running, at least, on im.uk.bitlbee.org, and probably on some other public servers.
