Description
I'm a big fan of BitlBee, and use it for all my IM and Jabber needs.
For a while, it was possible to use BitlBee + Jabber to interface with Twitter, but this was made impossible when Twitter stopped supporting Jabber a while ago. It's unlikely to return anytime soon, especially with the onset of so many dedicated Twitter clients out there.
I'd love to have Twitter support in BitlBee.
This also makes sense from the end-user perspective, as the server could enforce the 140 character limit (something the Jabber integration wouldn't), treat the people you follow on Twitter as IRC nicks, so you could do direct (private) messages via it, etc.
Happy to help out with the details of how it should work, but didn't want to start if there isn't interest/capacity to make this happen in BitlBee. :)
Thanks for a great product!

It's worth noting that 'tircd' is a twitter<->irc gateway that works reasonably. It does not support laconi.ca however, but proves that twitter/irc meshes. I'd definitely like to see more flexible microblogging support within bitlbee too.

This is making lots of progress by the way:
http://code.bitlbee.org/rb/r/23/
You can get a patch from there, or wait for a bit longer, I expect to merge this soon.

Enjoy!

I have to agree with this enhancement. It would be pretty nice to see Bitlbee supporting twitter. It has a huge userbase. I would extend it to Laconi.ca support too.
