Bitlbee receives null messages from mobile IM clients for AIM

When receiving messages over AOL Instant Messenger (Haven't confirmed this for ICQ but might be possible) from a mobile phone client Bitlbee simply presents "(null)" as the message to the IRC client. Messages from the IRC client to the mobile AIM client work fine. Tested on T-Mobile's IM service using both a Nokia 5300 and a Nokia 6103; both with same results.
