[0c60f96]1= Skype plugin for BitlBee
[7f1cf70]2Miklos Vajna <vmiklos-at-vmiklos-dot-hu>
[afe221f]3
[56e4ac4]4== Status
5
[4eaadf6]6[Wilmer van der Gaast (author of BitlBee)]
7____
8Okay, this exists now, with lots of thanks to vmiklos for his *excellent*
9work!!
10
11It's not in the main BitlBee and it'll never be for various reasons, but
12because it's a plugin that shouldn't be a problem.
13____
14
[56e4ac4]15One day I browsed the BitlBee bugtracker and found
16http://bugs.bitlbee.org/bitlbee/ticket/82[this] ticket. Then after a while I
[1138b25]17returned and saw that it was still open. So I wrote it.
[56e4ac4]18
[2042b56]19It's pretty stable, I use it for my daily work. Being a plug-in, no patching
[20994cb]20is required, you can just install it after installing BitlBee itself.
[75742cc]21
[4c3a4c8]22NOTE: You will see that this implementation of the Skype plug-in still requires
[54c269d]23a Skype instance to be running. This is because I'm not motivated to reverse
24engineer Skype's
25http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Skype_Protocol#Obfuscation_Layer[obfuscation
26layer]. (Not mentioning that you should ask your lawyer about if it is legal or
27not..)
28
[22d97b4]29== Requirements
30
[7987be8]31* Skype >= 1.4.0.99. The latest version I've tested is 2.0.0.68.
[36fbaa0]32* BitlBee >= 1.1.1dev. The latest version I've tested is 1.2.
[eb39102]33* Skype4Py >= 0.9.28.7. Previous versions won't work due to API changes.
[d276c9a]34
[b019c23]35NOTE: I had not had time yet to add support for 1.x yet.
[d276c9a]36
[c60b864]37* Python >= 2.5. Skype4Py does not work with 2.4.
[e49da25]38* PyGObject >= 2.8.0. Older versions are part of PyGTK. (And you don't want to
39  install GTK for nothing, right?)
[b0d40f5]40* pyopenssl or python-gnutls.
[22d97b4]41
[df1a59d4]42`bitlbee-skype` has been tested under Linux and Mac OS X. Skype and Skype4py is
43available under Windows, too, so it probably works, but this has not been tested.
[760ed1f]44
[9e03e55]45== How to set it up
[afe221f]46
[751b149]47Before you start. The setup is the following: BitlBee can't connect directly to
48Skype servers (the company's ones). It needs a running Skype client to do so.
49In fact BitlBee will connect to `skyped` (a tcp server, provided in this
[4c3a4c8]50package) and `skyped` will connect to to your Skype client.
[751b149]51
[d0a6a8c]52The benefit of this architecture is that you can run Skype and `skyped`
53on a machine different to the one where you run BitlBee (it can be even
54a public server) and/or your IRC client.
[7e4f0ca1]55
[d0a6a8c]56NOTE: The order is important. First `skyped` starts Skype. Then `skyped`
57connects to Skype, finally BitlBee can connect to `skyped`.
58
59=== Installing under Frugalware
60
61- Install the necessary packages:
[11eed8f]62
[36fbaa0]63----
[5293707]64# pacman-g2 -S bitlbee-skype skype4py
[36fbaa0]65----
66
[4966d841]67and you don't have to compile anything manually.
68
[d0a6a8c]69=== Installing under Debian
70
71- Install the necessary development package:
[4966d841]72
73----
74# apt-get install bitlbee-dev
75----
76
[5293707]77and you have to install `bitlbee-skype` and `skype4py` from source.
[4966d841]78
[d0a6a8c]79=== Installing from source
80
81- You need the latest stable BitlBee release:
[afe221f]82
[0c60f96]83----
[36fbaa0]84$ wget http://get.bitlbee.org/src/bitlbee-1.2.tar.gz
85$ tar xf bitlbee-1.2.tar.gz
86$ cd bitlbee-1.2
[0c60f96]87----
[afe221f]88
[d044a5a]89NOTE: You no longer need additional patches, as of version 1.1.1dev.
[b8b0bfd]90
[afe221f]91- Now compile and install it:
92
[0c60f96]93----
[ccb50f5]94$ ./configure
95$ make
96# make install install-dev
[0c60f96]97----
[afe221f]98
[21a387fd]99- Get the plugin code (in an empty dir, or whereever you want, it does
100  not matter):
[afe221f]101
[0c60f96]102----
[3b495c0]103$ wget http://vmiklos.hu/project/bitlbee-skype/bitlbee-skype-@VERSION@.tar.gz
104$ tar xf bitlbee-skype-@VERSION@.tar.gz
105$ cd bitlbee-skype-@VERSION@
[0c60f96]106----
[afe221f]107
108- Compile and install it:
109
[0c60f96]110----
[ccb50f5]111$ ./configure
112$ make
113# make install
[0c60f96]114----
[afe221f]115
[21a387fd]116This will install the plugin to where BitlBee expects them, which is
117`/usr/local/lib/bitlbee` if you installed BitlBee from source.
118
[5293707]119- To install http://skype4py.sourceforge.net/[Skype4Py] from source:
120
121----
122$ tar -zxvf Skype4Py-x.x.x.x.tar.gz
123$ cd Skype4Py-x.x.x.x
124# python setup.py install
125----
[c15f71a]126
[d0a6a8c]127=== Configuring
128
[52d377d]129- Edit `/usr/local/etc/skyped/skyped.conf`: adjust `username` and `password`. The
[e65ceaa]130  `username` should be your Skype login and the `password` can be whatever you
131  want, but you will have to specify that one when adding the Skype account to
132  BitlBee (see later).
133
[52d377d]134NOTE: Here, and later - `/usr/local/etc` can be different on your installation
135if you used the `--sysconfdir` switch when running bitlbee-skype's `configure`.
136
137- Generate the SSL pem files:
138
139----
[ccb50f5]140# cd /usr/local/etc/skyped
141# openssl req -new -x509 -days 365 -nodes -config skyped.cnf -out skyped.cert.pem \
[52d377d]142        -keyout skyped.key.pem
143----
144
[ccb50f5]145NOTE: Maybe you want to adjust the permissions in the `/usr/local/etc/skyped`
146dir. For example make it readable by just your user.
147
[b0d40f5]148- If both pyopenssl and python-gnutls are available, then python-gnutls
149  will be used. This behaviour can be overwritten by:
150
151----
152$ export SKYPED_NO_GNUTLS=1
153----
154
[833eaee]155- Start `skyped` (the tcp server):
[afe221f]156
[0c60f96]157----
[ccb50f5]158$ skyped
[0c60f96]159----
[ba20c39]160
[4c3a4c8]161- Start your `IRC` client, connect to BitlBee and add your account:
[7338d59]162
163----
[789d055]164account add skype <user> <pass>
165account set skype/server localhost
[7338d59]166----
167
[e65ceaa]168<user> should be your Skype account name, <pass> should be the one you declared
[10a42d9]169in `skyped.conf`. If you want to run skyped on a remote machine, replace
170`localhost` with the name of the machine.
[7338d59]171
[9ace502]172If you are running skyped on a custom port:
173
174----
175account set skype/port <port>
176----
177
[7996794]178If you want to set your full name (optional):
179
180----
181account set skype/display_name "John Smith"
182----
183
184If you want to see your skypeout contacts online as well (they are
185offline by default):
186
187----
188account set skype/skypeout_offline false
189----
190
[23b84e1]191== Setting up Skype in a VNC server (optional)
192
193Optionally, if you want to run Skype on a server, you might want to setup up
[4c3a4c8]194a `VNC` server as well. I used `tightvnc` but probably other `VNC` servers will
[23b84e1]195work, too.
196
197First run
198
199----
[ccb50f5]200$ vncpasswd ~/.vnc/passwd
[23b84e1]201----
202
203and create a password. You will need it at least once.
204
205Now create `~/.vnc/xstartup` with the following contents:
206
207----
208#!/bin/sh
209
[2dbb768]210twm
[23b84e1]211----
212
[57087df]213Adjust the permissions:
214
215----
[ccb50f5]216$ chmod +x ~/.vnc/xstartup
[57087df]217----
218
[23b84e1]219Then start the server:
220
221----
[ccb50f5]222$ vncserver
[23b84e1]223----
224
[ece66da]225Then connect to it, start an `xterm`, set up Skype (username, password,
226enable X11 API and allow the `Skype4Py` client), quit from Skype, and
227start `skyped`. If you want to watch its traffic, enable debug messages
228and foreground mode:
[23b84e1]229
[ece66da]230----
231$ skyped -n -d
232----
[dffa24f]233

[0c60f96]319== I would like to have support for ...
320
[23b84e1]321If something does not work and it's not in the TODO section, then please
[e72d869]322contact me! Please also try the link:HACKING[git version] before reporting a bug, your
[80d9004]323problem may be already fixed there.
[23b84e1]324
325In fact, of course, I wrote this documentation after figured out how to do this
326setup, so maybe I left out some steps. If you needed 'any' additional tricks,
327then it would be nice to include them here.

366Thanks for bitlbee-skype. As a blind Linux user, I cannot use the
367skype GUI client because qt apps ar not accessible yet with the
368available screen readers. bitlbee-skype allows me to make use of skype
369without having to interact much with the GUI client, which helps me a
370lot.
